We are in the era of large, decentralized, distributed environments where the amount of devices and data and the heterogeneity thereof is getting out of control. Citizens and organizations capture billions of bytes of data through their everyday operations, but their ability to collect, manage and interpret this information could be an obstacle to its use. The web is widening the range of data providers and consumers. Decision-making is based on accurate information, whose appropriate manipulation generates knowledge, which in turn gives competitive advantage to companies. Hence, processing, organizing and analyzing data in order to derive knowledge from them acquires paramount importance.

This track is designed in collaboration with the Master Courses of Mathematical Engineering  and of  Management Engineering, and proposes to import 10 credits from each of them. 

In addition to the courses that are mandatory for all students, the Big Data track includes BUSINESS INFORMATION SYSTEMS 1, MODEL IDENTIFICATION AND DATA ANALYSIS, MACHINE LEARNING, DATA MINING AND TEXT MINING and TECHNOLOGIES FOR INFORMATION SYSTEMS.

Moreover, the track can be focused according to the different methodological approaches by adding one of the following courses:

  • ·          DATA MANAGEMENT FOR THE WEB , and (BUSINESS INFORMATION SYSTEMS 2 or  DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS   or COMPUTER SYSTEMS PERFORMANCE EVALUATION) for the methodological area ICT for the Enterprise,
  • ·          Both courses: DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS and COMPUTER SYSTEMS PERFORMANCE EVALUATION for the areas Software Methodologies and Computer Architectures.

To take into account the inter-disciplinarity of  this program, 10 credits should be chosen among the following courses:  FROM MATHEMATICAL ENGINEERING: Applied Statistics (code: 085940, 2 semester),  10 CFU ; Bayesian Statistics (code: 085941, 1 semester),  10 CFU; Advanced programming for scientific computing (code 085938, 2 semester ) , 10 CFU  ; and 10 credits FROM BUSINESS ENGINEERING: Multichannel Customer Strategy, 10 CFU  (active from academic year 2015/16), Accounting And Finance, 10 CFU, Operations Management (10 CFU),  Digital Business Innovation (5 CFU)

PoliCloud is a Cloud infrastructure designed, managed, and deployed by Politecnico di Milano and made possible by donations from IBM and Yahoo (YSTAR – Yahoo Servers To Academic Researchers Program) . This inter-dipartimental lab is available for the students to train and experiment within the Big Data curriculum.
